In any effort, we can approach it from the top-down or the bottom-up. The top-down style prioritizes order. The bottom-up style prioritizes curiosity. The problem is getting stuck in a single style. For decades, folders forced us to prioritize order—tying our thoughts into knots. In recent years, links have allowed us to play with ideas more loosely—sometimes so loosely we get lost in the forest. But with just a couple techniques, we can leverage linked notes to flow between thinking styles—empowering us to reliably make progress in our most important efforts.
